I was born in New Brunswick, NJ to a mother who was a chemist-turned-psychotherapist and a father who was a chemical engineer. At the age of four we moved to Escondido, CA where my father retired and turned to farming avocados and many kinds of rare fruit. I was the youngest of three siblings, both brothers eventually attaining doctorates in scientific endeavors; physics and biology. I graduated from Orange Glen High School in Escondido before attending Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, where I majored in Psychobiology, not quite able to decide between psychobiology and biology, and so, choosing both. During my high school and college years I competed in water polo, swimming and triathlons, the latter of which I continued for many years after. I completed a Masters of Science degree in Physiology at the University of California, Davis in 1988 before working the next four years in Clinical Research, the process of bringing new medications to market in a process approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It was during this time I met some fascinating physicians and realized THEY had the kind of knowledge and expertise I wanted for myself, so at the age of 30 I began my medical studies at Loyola Stritch Medical School in Chicago, IL. It was four of the most interesting years of my life. I chose to specialize in Internal Medicine, which allowed me a breadth and depth to my experience with adult patients I could not get any other way. In my current work I can address psychological issues as well as the physical, and explore the complex interplay between mind and body I have always enjoyed thinking about.
After completion of my residency program in Internal Medicine at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, I began a clinical practice nearby, eventually assuming the practice of Dr. Leonard Bernstein, with whom I practiced for the next ten years. I continue to enjoy a wide variety of exposure to all kinds of clinical scenarios. My current clinic is located directly across the street from Scripps Mercy Hospital and I frequently go back and forth for my clinical duties. In the office I see patients with the usual adult medical problems such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and diseases of the skin and joints. My major interests include weight management, physical fitness, quality sleep without medications, graceful aging and avoidance of falls. I pride myself on providing longer appointment times and a greater degree of physician-patient contact time. I am a member of the teaching faculties at Scripps Mercy Hospital and University of California, San Diego. I enjoy Expert Witness work immensely and provide Concierge services to a small subpopulation of my clients. I also perform Internal Medicine consultations for new patients in our Behavioral Health Unit at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
